Do not covet

📖 Reading the Bible

Exodus 20:17
Do not covet a man's house, nor covet his wife, his servants, his ox or donkey, and all that he has.

Psalm 10:3
For the wicked boast of their will. The money-loving man turns his back on Yahweh, and despises him (or does his blessing to the rich-loving man, but despises Yahweh).

Proverbs 15:27
Those who are greedy for gain, trouble their own homes. He who hates bribes shall live.

Proverbs 20:13
Don't be a snooze, or you will be poor. Open your eyes and you will be full.

Proverbs 23:3
Do not covet his food, for it is coaxing food.

Proverbs 23:21
For those who love wine and gluttony will become poor. Those who sleep well wear rags.

Proverbs 28:25
Greedy in heart, provoking disputes. Those who trust in the LORD will be prosperous.

Luke 12:15
So he said to the people, Take heed to yourselves, and avoid all covetousness. Because human life does not care about the wealth of the family.

1 Timothy 6:10
The love of money is the root of all evil. There are those who are greedy for money, who are led away from the faith, and pierce themselves with many sorrows.

💡 Reflection today
1️⃣ The commandment of the Tenth Commandment refers to our "attitude", which is internal and not easy for people to know. God endowed people with desires: yes
  1. The desire to get things
  2. The desire to achieve
  3. Produced Desires Desires themselves are not wrong, but these desires need to be rectified in truth.

2️⃣ God rewards people with things:
  1. All things good: "Genesis 1:31" "God saw that all that he had made was very good."

  2. Admirable truth: "Psalm 19:10" "All is more desirable than gold, and more desirable than much pure gold; sweeter than honey, and sweeter than the honey that drips from the hive."

  3. Gifts of all kinds: "1 Corinthians 14:1" "Pursue after love, and desire spiritual gifts."

3️⃣     The performance of "greed"
  1. Excessive desire: We must be keen to examine our desires to know whether our desires are excessive. In the Old Testament God rebuked the people for their "greed" through prophets. The New Testament, James 4:1-3, exhorts: "Where does the strife and strife among you come from? Does it not come from the desire to fight among your members? You fight and fight, but you can’t get it. You don’t get it because you don’t ask. You ask and you don’t get it because you ask in vain and waste it in your pleasures.”

  2. Unlawful desire: The so-called "forbidden" fruit is that although it is beautiful, it has a clear sign: "No". Example: Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden did not take the "prohibition" set by God as good. The same is true of what Achan did in Joshua 7.

  3. The desire for profit: Motivated by one's own desires, seeking opportunities from others. (Ezekiel 22:12; 2 Peter 2:3)

  4. Desire for money: The ideology of life is solely for the purpose of getting more from oneself! (1 Timothy 6:9-10)

4️⃣     The impact of "greed" on people
  1. Dishonesty: David's dishonesty in coveting Uriah's wife, Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:6-13).

  2. Injustice: The injustice committed by King Ahab and Queen Jezebel in their coveting of Naboth's vineyard (1 Kings 21).

  3. Not following the Lord: The incident of the rich young man, please note that Jesus did not mention the first four commandments and the tenth commandment in his questioning (Matt. 19:16-30)

Pray, Heavenly Father, to wash away and forgive all my sins by the blood of the Lord Jesus shed on the cross. Father God, enlighten me, and I will empty myself of my sins before You.

Please forgive me that my heart is cold to You, that I do not love You but love many things on earth. Father, forgive me for being drawn to the world's fame, fortune, and wealth.

Please forgive me, my mind is always occupied by filthy passions, lust, greed, jealousy, selfishness, and pride.

Please forgive me for being irritable with my family, being judgmental, lying, being false to others, and being a hypocrite.

Please forgive me for wasting a lot of time on personal entertainment without the intention to pursue the Word of God.

Remember your faithful promise: "If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

(1 John 1:9) I thank you that you will forgive me all my sins and unrighteousness, and make me holy before you.
Father God, please fill me with Your Holy Spirit and re-energize me to live a godly life so that my words and deeds will glorify God.

Father God, I praise you that you have made Christ holy and righteous to me, and I love you. Pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, amen!

💡 Today's Reflection
1️⃣ The 10th Commandment refers to our "attitude", which is internal and not easy for people to know.   God gives people desire
  1. The desire to acquire
  2. The desire to achieve
  3. The desire to produce
There is nothing wrong with desires themselves, but these desires need to be guided in truth.

2️⃣ God rewards people things:
1. All beautiful things: Genesis 1:31 "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good."

  2. The enviable truth: Psalm 19:10 "More to be desired are they than  gold,  even much  fine gold; sweeter also than honey  and drippings of  the honeycomb."

  3. Various gifts: 1 Corinthians 14:1 "Pursue love, and  earnestly desire the  spiritual gifts"

3️⃣ The performance of "greed"
1. Excessive desire: We must keenly test our desires and know whether our desires are excessive.   In the Old Testament, God used the prophets to reprove the people for "greed".   The New Testament James 4:1-3 exhorts like this: "What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you?   Is it not this, that your passions are  at war within you?  You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel.   You do not have, because you do not ask.   You ask and do not receive, because you ask  wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

2. Illegal desire: The so-called "forbidden" fruit means that although it is beautiful, it has a clear mark: "No".   Example: Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden did not regard the “prohibition” set by God as good.   The same is true of what Achan did in Joshua 7.

3. Desire for profit: Use own desires as motivation to find opportunities from others.   (Ezek 22:12; 2 Peter 2:3)

4. The desire for wealth alone: The ideology of life only aims at getting more things from oneself! (1 Timothy 6:9-10)

4️⃣ The impact of "greed" on people
1. Dishonesty: The dishonesty that David showed when he was greedy for Uriah's wife Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:6-13).

2. Injustice: the injustice of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel coveted over Naboth's vineyard (1 Kings 21).

  3. Not following the Lord: The incident of the young rich man, please note that the first 4 Commandments and the 10th Commandment were not mentioned in the question of Jesus (Matthew 19:16-30)

Prayer
Father, by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus on the cross, please wash away and forgive all my sins.

Father God, please enlighten me, and I will confess my sin before You.

Please forgive my heart for being cold to You, not loving You but loving many things on earth.   Father, please forgive me for being attracted to the fame and wealth of the world.

Please forgive me for being overwhelmed by filthy passions, greed, jealousy, selfishness, and pride in my mind.

Please forgive me for being irritable to my family, judging people, lying, being hypocritical to others.

Please forgive me for wasting a lot of time on my personal entertainment, but I have no intention of pursuing the Word of God.

Please remember your faithful promise: "If we confess our sins, He is  faithful and just to forgive us our sins and  to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9) I thank You, because You will forgive all my sins and injustices, and make me holy before You.

Father God, please fill me with the Holy Spirit so that I can regain my strength and build a godly life, so that everything I say and do can glorify God.

Father God, I praise You, You have made Christ my holiness and righteousness, I love You.   In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, ameyn!
